Professional Bio

Dr. Mark Dobbertien is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville, Illinois. He is responsible for driving superior clinical outcomes in the hospital via collaboration within the OSF System and regional leaders to ensure that clinical programs are in place to meet the healthcare needs of the population within the region and that quality outcomes are achieved. Dobbertien also serves as a key leader in developing clinical practice optimization strategies and has input into digital enhancements within OSF hospitals and ambulatory practice.
Dobbertien received his Bachelor of Science degree in Preprofessional Studies from the University of Notre Dame in 1980, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from The Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1987. He completed general surgery specialty training in 1992 at the University of Illinois Metropolitan Group Hospitals and completed a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at the University of Florida in Jacksonville in 2011. Dr. Dobbertien completed his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Florida in 2021.
Dr. Dobbertien served twenty years in the United States Navy Medical Corps and many years in private practice in Northeast Florida as a general surgeon and emergency department physician prior to coming to Danville as the Sacred Heart CMO. He served in leadership roles in combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dobbertien was one of the first Naval Medical Officers to earn the Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer (FMFQO) warfare designation and also qualified as a Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer (SWMDO) while deployed to 5th Fleet serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of ERSS Team 8 aboard USS Momsen (DDG-92) and USS Nitze (DDG-94). Commander Dobbertien’ s personal awards include the Meritorius Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Joint Achievement Medal.
